"Nello et Patrasche" are the two heroes of the novel "A dog in flanders", written under the pseudonym "Ouida" by an English woman who visited the Antwerp area in 1871. The novel tells the story of Nello, a young Orphan and his dog Patrasche. After a series of tragic events they both died , inseparable, on Christmas night in the Antwerp cathedral, just below a painting by Rubens.
The novel was to become a classic of children's literature and has been translated in many languages, including Japanese.
A statue representing the two friends, a work created by Yvonne Bastaens, has been raised in front of the Hoboken information center, on the Kioskplein.
